i married a witch
This 1942 film, starring vampire Veronica Lake, is set in a different era but has great appeal. The plot of the black-and-white film involves her 17th-century witch who comes to life for revenge. To wreak havoc in the life of the boy grandson who left her dead, she cast a love spell on him, with some comedic consequences. Even so, it’s riddled with outdated gender stereotypes, tinged with the misogynistic idea of living to serve men.

deception
Oh, do I have to give you a synopsis for this movie? Just in case: This is the story of the Sanderson sisters, witches of Salem who came to life on Halloween night thanks to a boy. There aren’t many really scary scenes, but the famous Buke is made of human skin and has other spooky moments. Cauldron is underrated, but it should be noted that some of the humor and innuendo (including the vaguely sexual) will go over the heads of younger children, and the long-awaited sequel will be his coming to his Disney+ at the end of September!

Speaking of witch movies for kids, this 1971 Disney classic takes a light approach to magic with a heroic twist. Three children join a witch apprentice on a quest to find the missing ingredient in a spell used to protect Britain during World War II. The Nazis and World War II are terrifying enough in this musical starring Angela Lansbury, but there are no scary moments. Overall fine for younger viewers, but be warned it’s a long movie.

teen witch
Not surprisingly, this 1989 rom-com is arguably teen-friendly, largely because it’s primarily about teenage love quests, and some scenes include sex education classes. Perfect for teenagers and up. Some parents may find this inappropriate for younger children, and younger children may find it boring. As for the scary scenes, that’s pretty low as the witch is her teenage protagonist trying to cast a love spell for herself. If you have a tsuienager who loves witches and isn’t good at jump scares, this is it is the movie for them.

practical magic
Based on the novels by Alice Hoffman, this film is not because it has scary scenes, but because it has a lot of heterosexual interest scenes, including a non-explicit but overtly naked scene with Nicole Kidman. Perfect for young people. Suitable for younger children (tweens would be embarrassed). However, the plot is entirely witchy, and teenagers will enjoy the idea of two witch sisters and their aunt who are outcasts in the small town where she lives.

Beautifully played by Tilda Swinton, the White Witch has no intention of going quietly and uses all sorts of trickery, witchcraft and evil magic to try and stop her children. It captures the magic of the book, but with some scary, sad, and violent scenes, this movie might be too much for children under 8. Equivalent to Into the Woods.
