Apple in February revealed a new “Tap to Pay on iPhone” feature that will allow compatible iPhones to accept payments via Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets, without the need for additional hardware.
Apple began testing the feature at the Apple Park Visitor Center earlier this month, and now BloombergMark Gorman Tweeted The feature will begin appearing in Apple stores across the US starting today, allowing customers to try it out. The feature may not be available in every Apple Store right away.
Apple said the feature will launch in the US later this year, but the company has yet to share a specific launch timeframe. This feature will allow small businesses and merchants to accept contactless payments through supported iOS apps using iPhone XS or later. At checkout, the merchant will simply ask the customer to keep their iPhone or Apple Watch, contactless credit or debit card, or other digital wallet near the merchant’s iPhone, and the payment will be completed securely using NFC technology.
Currently, merchants that accept contactless payments on the iPhone must rely on additional devices like Square Reader, which come in different models that work wirelessly or connect to the Lightning connector or headphone jack on the iPhone.
